Transitional Executive Presbyter Job Description

Pueblo Presbytery, rev. 09.14.26

Introduction

The Pueblo Presbytery’s stated clerk and executive presbyter will retire from their part-time positions on December 31, 2026. After years of traditional ministry at the presbytery level, we are currently refocusing our mission in light of declining membership and revenues. We plan to have the stated clerk position filled in October 2026, and are seeking a candidate to serve part-time as our Transitional Executive Presbyter (TEP). We intend to present the candidate at the Presbytery Meeting on October 17, 2026, and for the candidate to start no later than January 1, 2027. When the presbytery is ready to search for a permanent executive presbyter, the TEP may choose to apply for that position. However, the intention of this document is to search only for a TEP. Pueblo Presbytery covers 35,000 square miles in Southeastern Colorado and includes thirteen congregations plus a handful of new worshiping communities in city, mountain, and rural settings.

Relationships

  • Collaborators: The TEP will work closely with the stated clerk, and join the work of our Visioning Task Force, the Coordinating Council, the Personnel Committee, and other presbytery entities as appropriate to achieve the TEP goals
  • Supervision: The TEP will supervise our part-time presbytery staff (an office administrator and bookkeeper)
  • Resourcing: The TEP will be a resource for our committee chairs and volunteers, and for pastors and church sessions
  • Leadership: The TEP will promote the interests of the Pueblo Presbytery in relationship with other executive presbyters, and at the synod and national levels
  • Accountability: The TEP reports to the Coordinating Council

Goals

  • Provide a stable leadership presence within the Pueblo Presbytery
  • Ensure that the strategic conversations, which are occurring within and among Pueblo Presbytery committees and other entities, continue and make progress
  • Facilitate the care of Pueblo Presbytery’s pastors utilizing the Committee on Ministry and other resources within the presbytery and denomination
  • Identify the limiting realities and strategic vulnerabilities facing Pueblo Presbytery, and lead the reorganization of the presbytery’s structures accordingly

Gifts, Skills, Abilities

  • An ordained Minister of Word and Sacrament or Ruling Elder in the PCUSA
  • Expertise in group dynamics and group facilitation
  • Experience analyzing and adjusting staff and organizational configurations in light of emerging financial realities and mission opportunities
  • Collaborative and empowering work practices
  • Familiarity with larger trends in the PCUSA and mainline denominational ministry
  • Managing dynamics of change, including: conducting realistic assessments, having courageous conversations, dealing with loss and anxiety, identifying resources, envisioning possibilities
  • Thorough knowledge of the Book of Order

Compensation

This is a part-time position and exempt. Financial compensation will be determined according to each candidate’s qualifications. Compensation includes three weeks of vacation. Full compensation package will be configured according to the needs of the candidate and in conversation with appropriate presbytery entities.
